Freelance Project Director (maternity leave cover)

We’re looking for a freelance Project Director to temporarily take the lead of our Project Management department during a maternity leave. This is a freelance opportunity suited for a senior leader who can hit the ground running, lead with clarity, and guide our talented team of project managers while maintaining a high bar for delivery, process, and collaboration.

What you’ll do

You’ll be responsible for overseeing the Amsterdam projects, coaching and supporting a team of 8 PMs (from mid-level to lead level), overseeing a diverse range of product services, digital branding, and content projects. You’ll act as the person for all project management-related matters in our Amsterdam office, as the primary escalation point for the team, ensure resource allocation is balanced, and maintain process quality across all active projects. Next to the management tasks, you will also play an important role in running projects and new business proposals.

This role is perfect for someone experienced in leading multi-disciplinary project teams, who thrives in agency environments and brings strategic thinking to delivery management, all while keeping the team engaged and confident in your leadership.

What you’ll do

• Lead the PM team who executes a portfolio of complex digital, branding, and content projects end-to-end

• Provide hands-on leadership across a portfolio of complex digital projects

• Oversee resource allocation, workload balance, and capacity planning across the PM team

• Helps to create new proposals and assesses for feasibility, set strong foundations, and define success metrics

• Enforce consistency in process, documentation, risk management, and escalation paths

• Coach, mentor, and support a team of 8 Project Managers (mid to lead level)

• Act as the first escalation point for all PM related matters: resolving challenges, giving feedback, and maintaining momentum

• Teams with Business Directors on client strategy, proposals, and ongoing account alignment

• Represent PM interests at leadership level, ensuring delivery aligns with business goals

• Monitor budgets, forecasts, and reporting, and present insights to management

• Drive continuous improvement—refining workflows, templates, and standards across the department

What we need

• 8+ years’ experience in digital project / program management, with a proven leadership track record

• Deep experience in agency settings (product, brands, digital, content), managing multi-disciplinary workstreams

• Comfort working in hybrid methodologies (agile / waterfall / hybrid) and adapting with pragmatism

• Strong ability to assess project complexity, prioritize trade-offs, and maintain clarity under pressure

• A coaching, supportive leadership style; you’re viewed as a “source of truth” by your team

• Excellent communication skills—able to navigate ambiguity, influence stakeholders, and hold firm to standards

• Experience managing senior PMs, driving alignment, and handling escalations with diplomacy

• Solid grounding in financial oversight, reporting, capacity planning, and forecasting
